Ted Cruz was roasted for praising the freeway project he voted against

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is trending on social media again this week, this time for celebratory remarks from the senator about the “Ports to Plains” freeway — a project he championed in its conception, but like some , did not raise a hand when a bill to fund the initiative was voted on.

The excitement came in response to a video Cruz tweeted earlier this month showing the senator hailing the passage of the project as a “major bipartisan victory” in an interview with KAMC News’ Ryan Chandler in Lubbock, Texas.

“It’s a tremendous win and you’re right, it’s the result of decades of hard work,” Cruz told Chandler. “A few years ago, leaders from west Texas came to me and then met with me in the capital and asked if I would fight to permit the Ports-to-Plains Highway and move forward with construction… and I accepted this request. “

On Wednesday, the official White House Twitter account quoted Cruz’s video with a rejoinder highlighting the senator’s voting record on legislation that ultimately funded the project that would include sections of Texas’ I-27 highway as an addition to the interstate highway system will expel Gulf of Mexico to Canada.

“Senator Cruz voted against,” the White House cheerfully noted.

The bill in question was a $1.5 trillion federal spending package approved by the Senate in March that, among other things, avoided a government shutdown and earmarked billions of dollars for homeland and national security programs and infrastructure projects like the freeway Ports to Plains provided. Cruz was one of 31 senators to vote against the spending bill, which eventually passed by a 68-vote vote.

Cruz on Thursday defended the Ports to Plains highway approval ceremony, saying he voted “no” to the larger spending bill it was attached to.

“The destination of I-27 was literally Cruz-Lujan,” Cruz tweeted. “I wrote the damn thing and built the support to get it passed. What I voted against was a much larger package of independent and irresponsible spending by Democrats fueling skyrocketing inflation.”

Some social media users were far from convinced, noting that the glee with which Cruz spoke about the project appeared to be an attempt to mislead his constituents.

“You voted against it. Thank you Biden and the Democrats!” Oscar winner Patricia Arquette tweeted in response.

“Ted… you like to compliment other people’s work.” another user tweeted.

The Ports-to-Plains project will span 26 counties in Texas and was billed as a means of improving roads and speeding the transportation of produce and cattle from Texas farmers and ranchers to market.
